Choosing the Right Fluid Transfer Equipment: A Practical Buying Guide for Oil, Grease and Fuel


Moving oil, grease, or fuel sounds simple until the equipment is the wrong fit for the job. A pump suited to engine oil from a 20-litre drum may struggle with heavy gear oil, while a compact diesel pump for a service vehicle may be the wrong choice for a fixed workshop refueling station. Fluid type, container size, transfer distance, flow rate and frequency of use all matter.

The best way to choose from that range is not to start with the pump. Start with the job.

This guide looks at three common situations — oil transfer, greasing, lubrication, and fuel management — and explains which type of STM equipment is right to move the task from occasional manual use to higher-volume workshop or fleet operation.

1. Oil transfer: match the pump to the oil, drum size and frequency of use

Oil transfer covers everything from topping up a gearbox from a small drum to supplying several workshop bays from 205-litre drums. The first questions are straightforward: what oil are you moving, what size container are you drawing from, and how often will the equipment be used?

For occasional servicing, a manual pump is usually the simplest answer. It requires no air supply or power, is easy to move and keeps the setup uncomplicated. For regular workshop use, however, the labor saved by an air-operated system quickly becomes more important, especially when oil needs to travel through a hose reel or be metered at the dispensing point.

For 20-litre and 60-litre drums: start with a dedicated manual pump


For smaller workshops, farms, garages or home servicing, the STM CA465G2 20L Manual Gear Oil Transfer Pump is a practical starting point. It is designed for 20-litre containers and delivers approximately one litre per 14 strokes. A telescopic suction tube, 1.5-metre anti-kink delivery hose, anti-drip nozzle and drain-back holder help keep dispensing straightforward and tidy.

The CA465G2 is suitable for gear oil, engine oil and hydraulic oil, making it a useful choice when the priority is a simple, dedicated pump rather than speed. If the same job is being done from a 60-litre drum, the CA467G2 60L Manual Gear Oil Transfer Pump follows the same basic principle in a larger format, with a 2-inch bung adaptor for secure drum mounting and the same approximate 14-strokes-per-litre delivery.

For users who want faster manual dispensing from a 60-litre drum, the CA469G Spring-Operated Oil Pump is another option. Its spring-actuated mechanism delivers approximately one litre in two strokes, so it can make sense where oil is dispensed more frequently but compressed air is not available.



The key buying point is viscosity. Heavy fluids generally need a pump designed for that job. Choosing a dedicated gear-oil pump is often more useful than simply choosing the pump with the highest advertised flow rate.

For 60-litre and 205-litre drums: rotary pumps provide simple higher-volume transfer

Where the requirement is to move larger volumes without installing a powered system, a rotary pump can be a better fit.

The STM DA01JW214 Industrial Rotary Drum Pump is designed for 60-litre and 205-litre drums. Its cast-iron body and hand-crank design provide continuous transfer at approximately three revolutions per litre. It is suited to most motor oils and diesel, but is not recommended for heavy gear oil and must not be used for petrol or other highly volatile fluids.

If a ready-to-dispense setup is preferred, the DA01JW216 Industrial Rotary Drum Pump with Hose uses the same basic rotary concept and adds a delivery hose and nozzle. That can be useful when the drum stays in a fixed position and the operator wants to dispense directly into a vehicle, machine or smaller container without adding a hose separately.


Manual rotary pumps make sense when reliability and independence from power matter more than automation, particularly for service vehicles, agricultural sheds and smaller workshops.

For busy workshops: move to air-operated oil transfer

Once oil dispensing becomes a daily workshop activity, the decision changes. Instead of asking whether a manual pump will do the job, consider how much technician time is being spent pumping, carrying containers and managing hoses.

The STM CK602 1:1 Pneumatic 205L Oil Transfer Kit is designed for direct dispensing from a 205-litre drum and delivers up to 18 litres per minute. The kit includes the air-operated pump, dispensing equipment and air-management components, giving a workshop a more complete solution than buying the pump alone.

A 1:1 system suits relatively direct transfer. When oil needs to travel farther, feed an oil bar or operate through hose reels, a higher-ratio air pump can be more appropriate. STM’s 3:1 long-series air-operated pump for 205-litre drums is designed for systems requiring more delivery pressure; higher-ratio options can suit longer runs or multi-reel arrangements.

The important point is that pump ratio should be selected around the complete installation. A bigger ratio is not automatically better. Hose length, oil viscosity, pipework, dispensing equipment and the number of outlets all affect the result.

The enclosed housing protects the hose, while the 15-metre SAE 100 R1 hose is rated up to 2,000 psi. Make clean transfer part of the system

Oil transfer is not only about getting fluid out of a drum. It is also about moving the right oil to the right machine without contamination or mix-ups.

STM’s Fluid Transfer System containers are available in 3-, 5- and 10-litre sizes, with the active range including the 5L and 10L containers. The translucent heavy-duty containers make the fluid level easy to see, while interchangeable lid and spout styles allow the container to be configured for different transfer tasks. Color-coded lid options can also help a workshop separate different lubricants.

At the other end of the oil lifecycle, consider how waste oil is collected. The DITI16206561 65L Low Level Drainer with Pump is designed for low-clearance waste-oil collection and uses an air-operated pump for emptying. For workshops servicing multiple vehicles, investing in clean dispensing but ignoring waste-oil handling leaves half the process unresolved.

2. Greasing and lubrication: choose between portability, pressure and volume

Grease presents a different challenge from oil. It is thicker, requires much higher dispensing pressure and is often applied to fittings in awkward locations. The right setup depends on whether the work involves occasional maintenance or repeated greasing across machinery, vehicles or workshop equipment.

For very light or mobile work, a hand grease gun remains the simplest solution. But once a business is working through 20kg or 60kg drums, a pneumatic grease kit is usually a much more productive approach.

For workshop and mobile servicing: 20kg pneumatic grease kits

The STM DITI1700512 Portable Air Operated Grease Kit is designed around a standard 20kg grease drum. Its 50:1 pneumatic pump is rated to a maximum working pressure of 8,700 psi, giving it the pressure needed for demanding lubrication points.

More importantly, it is supplied as a system rather than simply a pump. The standard package includes the pump, mobile trolley, follower plate, drum cover, four-meter high-pressure hose, Z-swivel and grease control gun. That matters because reliable greasing depends on the whole delivery path.

The follower plate is especially useful with heavier grease. It helps keep the grease feeding toward the pump inlet and reduces air pockets as the drum empties. The trolley then turns the drum and pump into a mobile lubrication station that can be moved around the workshop rather than bringing every machine to one fixed point.

The choice between the two is mainly about consumption and handling. A 20kg kit is easier to manoeuvre and suits businesses with moderate grease usage. A 60kg kit reduces drum changes where greasing is frequent, and consumption is higher.

Do not overlook the connection at the grease nipple

Pump performance also depends on the connection at the fitting.

STM’s DITI1785702 High-Pressure Z-Swivel is designed to let the grease line rotate through multiple axes instead of twisting the hose as the gun changes position. It is rated to 8,700 psi and uses 1/4-inch BSP male and female connections. On machinery with difficult access points, that small component can make the overall system much easier to use.

The same applies to couplers: a secure connection reduces leakage and makes high-pressure greasing easier. Treat the pump, hose, swivel, control gun and coupler as one system.

3. Fuel management: decide where the fuel is, where it needs to go and how fast

Fuel transfer equipment needs to be selected more carefully than a generic “fuel pump”. Power supply, fuel type, flow rate, metering and nozzle choice can all change the correct solution.

The first rule is compatibility. Equipment specified for diesel and kerosene should not be assumed suitable for petrol. Several STM diesel products are specifically marked as not suitable for petrol, so always check the intended fluid before use.

For field and vehicle-based refuelling: 12V diesel transfer

Where fuel needs to be moved from a drum or tank in the field, a 12V system is often the most practical choice because power is available from a vehicle or battery.

The STM DITI10304010 12V Diesel Transfer Pump Kit delivers up to 40 litres per minute and includes a four-meter delivery hose. Its self-priming design and integrated bypass valve are intended to make portable refuelling straightforward, while a built-in strainer helps keep debris out of the fuel being transferred.

For faster refueling, the DITI10307600 12V High Flow Diesel Pump Kit increases output to 76 litres per minute. It is intended for diesel and kerosene and includes a four-meter delivery hose, manual nozzle and quick-change drum connection. The extra flow can make a noticeable difference when larger tanks are filled repeatedly.

For fixed workshop or yard refueling: use a bowser-style system

If refueling happens from the same location every day, portability becomes less important and flow control becomes more valuable.

The STM DITI10308003 240V Commercial Diesel Bowser provides up to 80 liters per minute and incorporates a mechanical flow meter. The nozzle holder also acts as the system’s on/off switch, creating a more familiar forecourt-style workflow for regular refueling.

Where an existing diesel pump needs metering added to the line, the DITI15221002 In-Line Digital Diesel Flow Meter provides a 1-inch BSP connection and a working flow range of 10 to 100 litres per minute. Its digital display can show batch quantities in litres, gallons, pints or quarts.

For nozzle selection, consider whether the operator needs manual control or automatic shut-off. AdBlue needs dedicated equipment

AdBlue, Urea and DEF should be treated as their own transfer application rather than simply running through diesel equipment.

Dedicated AdBlue equipment helps protect fluid purity and ensures that wetted components are suitable for the application. Do not repurpose a diesel or oil pump unless it is specifically approved for the fluid being handled.

Build the solution around the job, not a single product

The easiest way to choose fluid transfer equipment is to work backwards from the application.

For occasional oil transfer, a manual gear or rotary pump may be all that is required. As volume and frequency increase, an air-operated pump, metered control gun and hose reel can turn the same task into an efficient workshop system. Greasing follows a similar progression from portable equipment to 20kg or 60kg pneumatic kits. Fuel management moves from battery-powered field transfer to higher-flow fixed bowsers, metering and dedicated nozzles.

The right solution should make fluid handling faster, cleaner and easier without unnecessary complexity. Start with the fluid, check compatibility, understand the container and transfer distance, decide how much flow is needed, then build around everyday use.
